Night School With Lee
Class Plan
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” --Ferris Bueller
Description:
There’s nothing like a crisis to shine a bright light on leadership--what works, what doesn’t, and what the heck are people thinking? In this eight-week, non-credit seminar-of-sorts, participants will build a community with other professionals and discuss current events, specifically, the COVID-19 crisis, and how these events are impacting our campuses. We’ll delve deeper into examples of leadership and its opposite state to see what we can learn about effective strategies. We’ll think and talk about the current state and potential future(s) of higher education and student affairs. The implications for our shared profession are enormous. How can we do more than prepare? How can we help shape those implications?
We’ll meet for an hour via Zoom, but if people want to go a bit longer, that’s fine, too. There’s a lot to discuss. Our meetings will take place over 8 consecutive weeks.
There are readings, but don’t sweat these. If you don’t get to them, please join the discussion anyway.
Learning outcomes:
By reading selected media coverage (reporting, essays, etc.), participants will develop insights about the skills necessary to lead through crisis;
Participants will analyze potential futures for higher education, particularly as a context for student affairs work;
Participants will connect with professionals on other campuses, hear about their experiences, learn from one another, and make some new friends.
